Court Directs Actor Vijay and Sangeetha to Appear in June in Divorce Case

Published on

Chengalpattu: The Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court in Tamil Nadu today deferred the hearing of the high-profile divorce petition involving Tamil superstar and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam. The case, which was listed as the fourth item on today’s court roster, has now been adjourned to June 15, 2026.

The hearing was presided over by Judge Sasikala. Neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared in person for today’s proceedings, leading the court to issue a fresh order directing both parties to be present for the next hearing in June. This marks the second time the case has been postponed since the initial filing in February.

The legal battle began when Sangeetha moved the court seeking a dissolution of their 27-year marriage under the Special Marriage Act. Her 12-page petition alleges emotional and mental cruelty, as well as infidelity. In the documents, she claims to have discovered in 2021 that the actor was involved in an extramarital relationship with a co-star. The petition further states that despite initial assurances to end the association, the relationship allegedly continued, causing her public humiliation and emotional distress.

Sangeetha’s plea also details a breakdown of the marital relationship, claiming the couple has been living separately within the same residence since 2021. She has accused the actor of excluding her from his social and professional life while traveling abroad and attending public events with the other individual. The petition highlights the mental trauma caused to her and their two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Sasha, due to the public visibility of these allegations on social media.

The timing of the case has drawn significant public and media attention, as Vijay is currently navigating a major career transition into full-time politics with his party, TVK, ahead of the upcoming state elections. While Sangeetha, a UK citizen, has sought permanent alimony and the right to reside in their matrimonial home, Vijay has yet to issue an official public statement regarding the allegations or the ongoing legal proceedings.
