‘Rail Mithra’ mobile app launched to enhance railway passenger safety

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 25: The Kerala Railway Police have launched ‘Rail Mithra’, a new mobile application aimed at delivering railway police services to the public through modern digital technology.
The application has been introduced as part of the Janamaithri Suraksha Project with the objective of ensuring effective safety and security for passengers during train journeys.
The initiative focuses on providing protection to passengers who may witness or face crimes while travelling by train, while also safeguarding their life, property, and privacy.
By strengthening communication between passengers and the Railway Police, Rail Mithra is expected to improve the overall security environment on trains, platforms, and railway premises across the state.
To make railway police services easily accessible to the public, Rail Mithra has been integrated with the Kerala Police’s official POL-App. Passengers can avail themselves of Rail Mithra services by downloading the POL-App. At present, five key services of the Kerala Railway Police are available through the application.
The first service, ‘Lonely Passenger’, is designed for passengers travelling alone by train. Through this service, individuals requiring assistance can alert the Railway Police, following which officers from the control room will personally contact them and ensure the necessary security arrangements during the journey.
The second service, ‘Shops on Platform’, provides travellers with information on food outlets and other shops operating on various railway station platforms, helping passengers access essential services while on the move.
The third service, ‘Secret Information’, enables passengers to confidentially share information related to incidents that occur during travel or matters connected with passenger safety. This facility allows travellers to discreetly inform the police, thereby contributing to improved security.
The fourth service, ‘Lost Property Gallery’, displays photographs of items lost during train journeys and later recovered by the police. Along with the images, details such as the place and date of recovery, the train involved, and the current location where the items are stored are also provided, assisting passengers in reclaiming their belongings.
The fifth service, ‘Report an Incident’, allows passengers to report various incidents occurring during train travel. Incidents inside train coaches, on platforms, and along railway tracks can be reported through this feature for prompt police response.
The formal launch of the Rail Mithra mobile application was held at the Thycaud Police Training College, where Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the application.
Officials said that beyond the five services introduced in the initial phase, steps are underway to incorporate advanced features in the future. These include Centre for Railway Informatics Systems (CRIS) services, train-based duty analysis modules, fingerprint verification modules, and dedicated modules to address stone pelting and train sabotage incidents.
The Rail Mithra application is expected to significantly strengthen passenger safety and enhance the efficiency and accessibility of Kerala Railway Police services through digital integration.
