HYDERABAD: The ongoing political confrontation between Telangana’s ruling Congress party and the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) reached a flashpoint, as a delegation of senior Congress ministers and leaders approached Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla at Raj Bhavan to formally register a complaint against the BRS leadership.
The Congress delegation accused former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) and BRS legislators of hatching a deliberate conspiracy to disrupt the Legislative Assembly proceedings, promote anti-Dalit sentiment, and incite lawlessness across the state.
The complaint stems from a sequence of turbulent events inside and outside the Telangana Assembly premises. Congress leaders highlighted recent “derogatory and abusive” remarks made by BRS MLCs against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar. Emphasizing that the Speaker belongs to the Dalit community, the ruling party ministers briefed the Governor that the BRS leadership’s slurs were not merely an insult to the Chair, but a targeted attack on marginalized communities and the democratic dignity of the House.
The ruling party ministers also brought to the Governor’s attention a controversial “purification” ritual conducted by BRS supporters near KCR’s farmhouse in Erravalli. The incident occurred following a peaceful protest held at the site by Dalit activists and Congress workers protesting the abusive language used against the Speaker. Congress leaders condemned the “purification” act as deeply discriminatory, casteist, and unacceptable in modern society.
Furthermore, Congress leaders defended police action at the Assembly gates, where BRS legislators attempting to march in black T-shirts created severe scuffles. According to the Congress delegation, opposition members deliberately provoked security personnel, obstructed public servants, and used unparliamentary conduct to engineer a spectacle and stall discussions on vital public welfare issues. Counter-FIRs have since been registered against several BRS lawmakers for misbehaving with on-duty personnel, and more than 20 BRS MLAs were suspended from the Assembly for the remainder of the session due to persistent ruckus.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reiterated the government’s stance, declaring an extensive investigation into the incidents and warning that the government will not tolerate “arrogance” or constitutional disrespect from the opposition. The Congress delegation urged the Governor to intervene and issue strict directives ensuring that the dignity of constitutional offices—including the Speaker’s post—is upheld and that the opposition is held accountable for intentional disruptions.
