BRS Women Delegation Meets NCW Chairperson in New Delhi, Alleges Police Manhandling

NEW DELHI: Escalating their ongoing political standoff with the state government, a high-level delegation of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) female legislators met National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson in New Delhi today, September 11. The delegation submitted a formal representation complaining of high-handed conduct, physical assault, and manhandling by police personnel outside the Telangana Legislative Assembly in Hyderabad.

The delegation—which included former ministers P. Sabitha Indra Reddy and V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy, along with MLA Kova Lakshmi and MLC Surabhi Vani Devi—briefed the commission on the incidents that unfolded during their recent demonstration. BRS leaders alleged that both male and female police personnel forcefully restrained elected representatives, pulled their hair, and dragged them by their sarees as they attempted to enter the Assembly grounds. Highlighting that the legislators were dressed in normal attire and attempting to exercise their constitutional rights, MLC Surabhi Vani Devi stated that the party was forced to approach national bodies after being denied adequate time and opportunity to air their grievances on the Assembly floor.

The submission follows recent critical remarks by the Telangana High Court, which took serious exception to photographs of the confrontation, questioned police authority over elected members inside Assembly precincts, and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to identify responsible officers for action. During their visit to the national capital, the BRS women leaders also indicated plans to submit a parallel complaint to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking a full-scale inquiry into the police action.
