Assam’s GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger reaches London in landmark export push

Published on

Dispur, March 2: Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora on March 1 flagged off the first-ever export consignment of GI-tagged ginger from Karbi Anglong to London, marking a significant milestone for the state’s agri-export ecosystem.

The flag-off ceremony was held at Krishi Bhawan in Guwahati, in the presence of senior agriculture department officials and stakeholders.

The export of the geographically indicated Karbi Anglong ginger is being seen as a major boost for local farmers and producer groups, as the GI tag helps secure better market recognition, traceability, and premium pricing in international markets.

Officials said the initiative aligns with the state government’s broader push to promote Assam’s indigenous agricultural produce globally and integrate farmers with high-value export supply chains.

The successful shipment to London is expected to open new avenues for future exports of GI-tagged products from Assam, while strengthening the income prospects of ginger growers in Karbi Anglong and reinforcing the state’s position in the global spice market.
