Budget Session begins today: “Hopeful for a fruitful Viksit Bharat session,”says Rijiju

New Delhi, Jan 28: The Budget Session of Parliament will begin on Wednesday with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, said, “We are hopeful for a fruitful Budget Session for a Viksit Bharat.”

The session will witness the presentation of the Economic Survey on January 29, offering a comprehensive review of the state of the economy, followed by the union Budget for 2026–27, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present on February 1.

Prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser, the Economic Survey provides a comprehensive assessment of the Indian economy for 2025–26 and outlines prospects for the coming fiscal year.

The Budget Session will span 30 sittings over 65 days and conclude on April 2. Parliament will adjourn for a recess on February 13 and reconvene on March 9, allowing Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments.

Ahead of the session, an all-party meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was held on Tuesday, where leaders from across the political spectrum shared issues they intend to raise and assured cooperation for the smooth functioning of Parliament.

The meeting was called by Kiren Rijiju, union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs. The meeting was also attended by union Minister for Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Jagat Prakash Nadda, who is also Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Law & Justice and Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Minister of State of Parliamentary Affairs and Information and Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan.

The all-party meeting was attended by 51 Leaders from 39 political parties, including Ministers.

The leaders were informed that the Budget Session of Parliament, 2026, will commence on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, and, subject to the exigencies of government business, may conclude on Thursday, April 2, 2026. During this period, both Houses will be adjourned for a recess on Friday, February 13, 2026, and will reassemble on Monday, March 9, 2026, to enable the Standing Committees to examine the Demands for Grants of various ministries and departments and submit their reports thereon. The session will comprise a total of 30 sittings—13 in the first part and 17 in the second part, spread over a period of 65 days.

The first part of the session will primarily focus on financial business related to the union Budget and the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address.

However, essential Legislative and other Business will also be taken up mainly during the second part of the Session.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs requested all the leaders for their cooperation for the smooth functioning of Parliament and stated that the Government is prepared and ready to discuss any other important issue on the floors of the Houses as per the rules of both the Houses of Parliament.
