Imphal, Feb 6: Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has been appointed as the President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. His appointment comes at a time when the party is seeking to consolidate its structure and intensify its political engagement in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
AICC General Secretary K Venugopal issued a statement on Thursday announcing the decision.
According to the statement, the appointments were made by the Congress President as part of efforts to revitalise the organisation at a crucial political juncture.
Alongside the new MPCC chief, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leadership was also reconstituted. Keisham Meghachandra, who was serving as Congress President, has been appointed as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, while K. Ranjit Singh will serve as Deputy Leader. Ibobi Singh had previously been serving as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party.
The party has named two Working Presidents, Victor Keishing and Manga Vaiphei, to assist in organisational affairs and coordination across different regions.
Md. Fajur Rahim has been appointed as the Treasurer of the MPCC.
In addition, key committees have been constituted to streamline campaign strategy and electoral preparedness. Former Speaker, Th. Lokeshwar Singh MLA has been appointed Chairperson of the Campaign Committee, while former Congress President, Moirangthem Okendro, will head the Election Committee as Chairperson.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee extended heartfelt congratulations to all the newly appointed office bearers. In a statement, the MPCC said, “We are confident that the collective leadership will strengthen the Congress party in Manipur and lead the people’s movement with dedication, unity, and commitment to democratic values.”
