New Delhi, Feb 1: Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections recorded a steady and encouraging rise in January 2026, reflecting continued economic momentum and improved tax collections.
Gross GST revenue for the month rose to Rs 1.93 lakh crore, marking a 6.2 per cent increase compared to January last year.
Domestic transactions remained the backbone of collections. Gross domestic GST revenue stood at Rs 1.41 lakh crore, growing 4.8 per cent year-on-year, supported by higher inflows from CGST, SGST and IGST.
At the same time, GST collected on imports showed stronger growth, with import-related revenue rising by over 10 per cent, indicating sustained trade activity.
After adjusting for refunds, net GST revenue in January climbed to Rs 1.71 lakh crore, registering a 7.6 per cent annual growth.
Net domestic revenue rose by over 6 per cent, while net revenue from imports increased by nearly 12 per cent, highlighting the improving contribution from customs-linked GST collections.
On a cumulative basis, gross GST collections during April–January of the current financial year reached Rs 18.43 lakh crore, reflecting an 8.3 per cent increase over the same period last year.
Net GST revenue for the period stood at Rs 15.96 lakh crore, up 6.8 per cent, supported by consistent domestic demand and better compliance.
State-wise trends also remained positive, with major states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh continuing to be the largest contributors. Several states reported healthy growth in their SGST collections after settlement, pointing to a broad-based recovery in regional economic activity.
Overall, the January GST numbers signal stable revenue growth and resilience in economic activity, offering comfort on the fiscal front as the government approaches the final quarter of the financial year.
