Kharge calls for free and fair elections, warns against threats to democratic institutions

‎New Delhi, Jan 25: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on National Voters’ Day underscored the centrality of the right to vote in shaping India’s future and raised concerns over what he described as attempts to undermine the country’s democratic processes.
‎In a message posted on Sunday on platform X, Kharge said National Voters’ Day serves as a reminder of the power vested in citizens. “National Voters’ Day is a powerful reminder that a nation’s future belongs to its people, and that our collective voice can shape our shared destiny,” he said.
‎Emphasising the need for credible electoral practices, the Congress chief asserted that citizens are entitled to elections conducted without fear or bias. “The people of India deserve a free, fair and fearless elections, where clean electoral rolls and level-playing field is the primary requisite,” Kharge stated.
‎He also alleged that democratic values are being weakened through practices that dilute voting rights. “Snatching the ‘Right to Vote’ through Vote Chori and unplanned SIR tarnishes India’s long-cherished Democracy,” he said, using the term “Vote Chori” to suggest manipulation of the electoral process.
‎Kharge further expressed concern over pressure on constitutional bodies, particularly the Election Commission of India.
“In recent times, our institutions like the Election Commission of India, have faced sustained pressure,” he noted, stressing the need to safeguard their autonomy. “It is therefore our solemn responsibility to protect their independence and integrity, so that Democracy does not merely survive, but truly thrives,” he added.
‎National Voters’ Day is observed annually on January 25 to mark the foundation of the Election Commission of India and to encourage greater participation in the electoral process.
Kharge’s remarks come amid ongoing political debate over electoral reforms, voter rolls, and the role of independent institutions in maintaining the credibility of India’s democratic framework.
