Tarique Rahman to Become Bangladesh PM; BNP Plans to Invite Modi for Swearing-In Ceremony

Published on

Dhaka, Feb 14; The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has won the recent elections, is preparing to form the government. Tarique Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and BNP Chairman, is expected to take oath as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Reports suggest that the BNP plans to invite several world leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the swearing-in ceremony, with a particular focus on South Asian countries. If Modi attends, it could become a significant development in India–Bangladesh relations.

It may be recalled that Sheikh Hasina’s government collapsed in August 2024 following student protests. Since then, a temporary advisory council led by Muhammad Yunus has overseen governance in Bangladesh, during which both countries faced diplomatic challenges.

Meanwhile, India has already conveyed its message on BNP’s victory. Modi personally called Tarique Rahman to congratulate him, stating that the election results reflect the people’s trust in his leadership. BNP expressed gratitude to Modi for his wishes.
