Chennai, Jan 25: The Tamil Nadu government has been strongly opposing the three-language formula (Hindi Language Row) for some time, alleging that the Central Government is attempting to forcibly impose Hindi on them. In this context, Chief Minister MK Stalin has once again brought this issue to the forefront. He stated that the people of the state love the Tamil language as their very life and will never tolerate any action that tries to overshadow it. He asserted that there is no place for Hindi in Tamil Nadu now, nor will there be in the future. He made these remarks on Sunday during the Tamil Language Martyrs’ Day event.
Stalin reminded everyone that the Tamil people have fought intense battles against Hindi in the past. He stated that every time there is an attempt to impose Hindi, they will express their protest with the same intensity. He further alleged that the Center is withholding funds meant for Tamil Nadu on the grounds that the National Education Policy (NEP) is not being implemented. However, he clarified that they would not back down on this matter. The Chief Minister also shared a video on social media regarding the 1965 anti-Hindi agitations in Tamil Nadu, paying tribute to the language martyrs who sacrificed their lives during those protests.
Background: The 1965 Movement
In 1965, a massive movement took place in Tamil Nadu against Hindi dominance and for the protection of the Tamil language. As the protests turned violent, many activists lost their lives. In memory of their sacrifice, the Tamil Nadu government has been observing January 25 as Tamil Language Martyrs’ Day since last year.
