Xiaomi Drives Up Smartphone Prices in India as Component Inflation Bites

NEW DELHI: Consumer electronics major Xiaomi has implemented a fresh wave of price hikes across several of its budget and mid-range smartphones in India. The decision reflects severe underlying pressure from global supply chain costs and escalating memory chip prices, marking the latest adjustment in a series of price revisions throughout the year.

The price adjustments affect popular models in both the flagship Xiaomi lineup and the volume-driving Redmi series. Lower-tier offerings, including budget models like the Redmi 15C and the Redmi 15 5G, have seen their retail tags increase significantly compared to their launch figures. Meanwhile, upper-tier models such as the Xiaomi 17 and Redmi Note 15 Pro series have also experienced price revisions, pushing mid-range smartphones closer to premium pricing tiers.

Industry analysts point to a sharp surge in component costs as the primary driver behind the shift. Global DRAM contract prices rose up to 90%, while NAND flash storage costs spiked substantially due to chipmakers prioritizing high-margin AI server hardware over smartphone supply. Because storage and memory components make up a sizable portion of total bill-of-materials costs in budget handsets, entry-level devices were hit disproportionately hard by component inflation.

The revised pricing presents a tough landscape for cost-conscious consumers, who now face higher entry points for basic hardware configurations. Market trackers expect other major smartphone vendors to follow suit with similar upward revisions over the coming quarter to protect operating margins against sustained supply chain friction.
