NEW DELHI: India Yamaha Motor has officially expanded its iconic R-series supersport lineup with the global unveiling of the all-new Yamaha YZF-R2. Marking India as the pioneer market worldwide to receive the new performance machine, the YZF-R2 bridges the gap between the entry-level R15 and higher-capacity multi-cylinder supersport motorcycles. The new motorcycle is launched across three distinct variants, with ex-showroom prices starting at ₹2.30 lakh for the base variant, ₹2.39 lakh for the Quick Shifter edition, and going up to ₹2.53 lakh for the top-spec YZF-R2 M trim. Deliveries for the track-focused machine will begin in mid-September through Yamaha’s specialized Blue Square dealership network nationwide.
At the heart of the YZF-R2 is an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder DOHC 4-valve engine that develops 26.5 PS (26.1 bhp) of maximum power and 19.1 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and an Assist & Slipper clutch. The motorcycle features a high-tensile steel diamond frame weighing just 14 kg, helping achieve a lightweight kerb weight of 149 kg, making it the lightest track-focused motorcycle in its displacement class. All variants come equipped with essential electronics including dual-channel ABS, Traction Control, and Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) featuring three riding modes—Street, Sport, and Rain. A 5-inch full-color TFT screen offers Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation, while the top-tier R2 M variant adds a Smart Key System, adjustable front suspension, adjustable levers, and a faux-suede seat.
Visually, the YZF-R2 borrows aggressive design language from its larger siblings, featuring front-end styling inspired by the YZF-R9, sleek LED DRLs, a projector headlight, and a tail section derived from the flagship YZF-R1. Manufactured locally at Yamaha’s facility in Chennai, the YZF-R2 aims to compete directly against established segment rivals such as the KTM RC 200 and the Hero Karizma XMR 210. By offering a clear performance upgrade path for existing 150cc owners seeking track-bred ergonomics and advanced electronics without the high maintenance costs of twin-cylinder platforms, Yamaha aims to capture a major share of the enthusiast market.
