Flydubai Hero Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar Airlifted to Dubai for Further Medical Treatment

DUBAI: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, praised internationally for his extraordinary courage during a mid-air cockpit emergency aboard a flydubai flight, has been airlifted from Saudi Arabia to Dubai for advanced medical treatment.

Machchhar sustained severe knife injuries during an attack by his co-pilot aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 while en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite being seriously wounded, the captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew and passengers to intervene, restrain the attacker, and avert a catastrophic crash. A second pair of off-duty pilots on board subsequently landed the Boeing 737 MAX safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Following emergency stabilization and treatment at a hospital in Tabuk, airline officials arranged for Captain Machchhar to be transferred back to the United Arab Emirates via a dedicated medical evacuation flight. Indian diplomatic authorities in Saudi Arabia confirmed that Machchhar’s condition is stable and that they remained in constant coordination with medical personnel and flydubai officials to facilitate his safe transport.

“Captain Smit Machchhar demonstrated remarkable composure and heroism under unimaginable circumstances,” an airline representative stated, confirming that he is now receiving specialized care in Dubai.

The incident occurred at cruising altitude when the co-pilot launched a violent attack, causing the aircraft to drop rapidly from roughly 34,000 feet. Witnesses reported chaos as the plane descended sharply before passengers and crew rushed into the opened cockpit to overpower the assailant. All 174 passengers and crew members arrived safely in Tabuk.

International political leaders and aviation safety organizations have lauded Machchhar’s swift thinking, which ultimately saved nearly 180 lives. International aviation regulators and law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack.
