Manali, Jan 31: The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) is set to introduce snowboarding for the first time on the slopes of Manali in Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant expansion of its winter sports training programme and adding a new dimension to organised snow sports in the state.
The development comes as ABVIMAS formally commences its winter sports season with the launch of Basic and Advanced Skiing Courses, reinforcing its standing as a national centre of excellence for snow sports and adventure training.
ABVIMS Director Avinash Negi said that a total of 109 participants from different parts of the country are currently enrolled in the two courses.
“The skiing courses began on January 27 and will continue for a duration of 14 days. Participants are undergoing structured and intensive training under the supervision of experienced instructors in high-altitude winter conditions on the Manali slopes,” he said.
He informed that the first skiing course scheduled to begin on January 13 had to be cancelled due to insufficient snowfall and unfavourable skiing conditions. With improved snow cover and safer conditions now prevailing, the present courses were launched after ensuring strict adherence to safety norms and training standards.
The next batch of Basic and Intermediate Skiing Courses will commence from February 14, providing another opportunity for aspiring skiers to receive professional training at the institute.
In a significant new initiative, ABVIMAS is planning to introduce a Snowboarding Course in February, responding to growing demand among winter sports enthusiasts, said Negi, adding that the date is yet to be announced.
The course will be offered with limited seats to ensure focused instruction and effective skill development.
The move is expected to diversify winter sports training at the institute and attract a new generation of adventure sports aspirants to Manali.
Over the years, ABVIMAS has produced several national and international-level skiers, making a substantial contribution to India’s winter sports ecosystem, he said, adding that the institute has also played a key role in promoting adventure tourism in Himachal Pradesh while creating self-employment opportunities for trained youth as ski instructors, guides, and adventure professionals.
“With its continued emphasis on quality training, safety, and innovation, ABVIMAS remains committed to strengthening organised winter sports in the country while supporting sustainable tourism and livelihood generation in mountainous regions,” he said.
