Delhi Traffic Police rolls out on-spot UPI payments for challans

New Delhi, Jan 16: People can now pay challans issued for traffic violations, on the spot, through UPI transactions by scanning QR codes. The move is aimed at making payment of challans more feasible and convenient for people, according to the Delhi Traffic Police.

A trial for the initiative was run in five circles in the first two weeks of January before finally implementing it across the Capital now.

Last year saw around 20 lakh challans and the same number of notices — challans issued through camera violations — pending.

S K Singh, DCP (Traffic Headquarters), said: “We launched this system to improve public perception and to make it easy for citizens to pay challans. People often complain that they were unable to pay challans on (government or court) portals or that the payments were getting declined. Now, online payments can be easily made on the spot. Once a payment is made, it will immediately reflect (on the system). The entire system has been integrated now.”

Around 1,500 QR code scanners will be distributed across the Capital, according to officers.

Earlier, people would visit the portals repeatedly or wait for their turn at Lok Adalats to pay challans. At times, even after a payment was made, it would take time to reflect on the system.  Thus the entire system has been integrated to streamline the process, traffic police personnel said, adding that this would also reduce the backlog.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Police department has also warned citizens against possible frauds. In a post on X, the department on Thursday wrote: “Pay traffic challans securely, lawfully, and responsibly—only through official portals.” The post also mentioned that people should only make payments on the Traffic Police or court websites.
