Manipur CM Flags Off 10-km Mega Awareness Run Against Drug Abuse in Imphal

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today flagged off a 10-km Mega Awareness Run organised by Manipur Police to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2026 at Kangla Western Gate, Imphal.

The awareness run saw nearly 2,000 participants from different walks of life, including students, youth volunteers, civil society representatives, government officials, and police personnel. Director General of Police Rajiv Singh also participated in the run.

The run commenced from Kangla Western Gate, proceeded up to Iroisemba Chingjin as the turning point, and concluded at the starting point.

The flagging-off ceremony was attended by Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, the Chief Secretary, senior police officers, and other dignitaries.

Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister said the awareness run symbolised the collective commitment of the government, police, and the people of Manipur to build a drug-free society.

“Manipur Police is organising this 10-km run on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It is a combined fight by the police and the people of the state to ensure that society becomes drug-free. Let us pledge to fight against drug abuse and make our society healthy,” he said.

In a statement, Manipur Police said the overwhelming public participation reflected the collective resolve to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking. It noted that the fight against drugs could only be won through the united efforts of the government, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, and citizens.

The event was organised to spread awareness on the harmful effects of drug abuse and the need to strengthen public participation in the campaign against narcotic drugs and illicit trafficking. Participants carried anti-drug messages throughout the run, underscoring the importance of prevention, rehabilitation, and community involvement in addressing substance abuse.

The programme forms part of the state government’s continuing efforts to promote a drug-free Manipur through public awareness, prevention initiatives, and coordinated action against drug trafficking in the state.
