New Delhi, Feb 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed the signing of a landmark agreement aimed at resolving decades-old issues concerning Eastern Nagaland, describing it as a “historic” step that will significantly boost development and prosperity in the region.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said the agreement reflects the Centre’s long-standing commitment to peace and inclusive growth in the Northeast.
“This is a historic agreement indeed, which will enhance the development trajectory of Eastern Nagaland in particular. I am sure it will open new avenues of opportunity and prosperity for the people,” Modi said. He added that the move underscores the government’s “unwavering commitment to peace, progress and inclusive growth in the Northeast.”
The agreement was signed on February 5 between the Government of India, the Government of Nagaland, and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO). It seeks to resolve long-pending demands and concerns of the eastern districts of Nagaland, which have for years sought greater administrative attention and equitable development.
Calling the pact a “giant step,” Home Minister Amit Shah, in a separate post on X, said it brings the region closer to his vision of a peaceful and prosperous Northeast. “It is a giant step towards realising Modi Ji’s vision for a peaceful and prosperous Northeast by resolving all contentious issues,” Shah said.
Eastern Nagaland, comprising several districts with distinct socio-economic challenges, has historically lagged behind other parts of the state in terms of infrastructure and development indicators. The ENPO has long articulated the aspirations of the people in the region, pressing for solutions to address governance, development and representation.
Officials said the agreement is expected to pave the way for focused development initiatives, improved governance mechanisms and greater participation of local communities in decision-making. The Centre has repeatedly emphasised that sustainable peace and development in the Northeast can only be achieved through dialogue and inclusive political solutions.
The latest agreement adds to a series of accords and understandings reached in recent years as part of the government’s broader effort to resolve long-standing disputes and foster stability across the Northeast.
