Shiv Pratap Shukla Appointed as Telangana Governor; 9 States Get New Governors in Major Reshuffle

New Delhi, March 6: The central government has unexpectedly appointed new governors for nine states. This reshuffle follows the sudden resignation of West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose.

Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been transferred to Maharashtra. In his place, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has been appointed as the new Governor of Telangana. Jishnu Dev Varma had been serving as Telangana’s Governor since July 31, 2024, and has now moved to Maharashtra.

Out of the nine appointments, five governors were transferred from one state to another, one was given additional responsibilities, and three were newly appointed. Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan’s term ended, and Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed in his place.

Born on April 1, 1952, in Rudrapur village, Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, Shiv Pratap Shukla studied law and was active in the BJP’s student wing ABVP. He joined the BJP in 1983 and was elected MLA multiple times from Gorakhpur. He served as Minister in Uttar Pradesh governments led by Kalyan Singh, Ram Prakash Gupta, and Rajnath Singh. Later, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2016 and became Union Minister of State for Finance in 2017. In February 2023, he was appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh, and now he has been transferred to Telangana.

Jishnu Dev Varma served for nearly 20 months as Governor of Telangana. A poet and writer, he actively participated in literary events and often spoke in Telugu to connect with people. He approved key bills, including the SC classification bill, municipal restructuring, GHMC division ordinance, and appointments of university vice-chancellors. He also addressed the state assembly and participated in major events like the Telangana Rising Global Summit.
