Hyderabad: The twin reservoirs of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar—historically the primary lifelines of Hyderabad—are receiving heavy flood inflows following intense, continuous downpours in their catchment areas across the neighboring Ranga Reddy district since Saturday.
The abrupt and heavy volume of water cascading into the reservoirs has prompted the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and irrigation department officials to put field engineering teams on high alert to monitor the rising water levels.
According to official data released by the HMWSSB on Sunday morning, the water levels in both lakes are rapidly approaching their Maximum Water Level (MWL) marks: Himayat Sagar: Against its full reservoir level (FRL) of 1,763.50 feet, the current water level has quickly climbed past 1,760 feet and continues to rise steadily. The reservoir is receiving an inflow of over 1,200 cusecs of stormwater. Osman Sagar (Gandipet): Against its FRL of 1,790 feet, the water level has touched 1,786.50 feet. Inflows from the upper catchment areas of the Musi river basin are currently clocked at approximately 800 cusecs.
The sudden surge of floodwater is a direct result of heavy rainfall recorded in the upstream regions of Ranga Reddy district over the last 24 to 36 hours. Areas like Chevella, Moinabad, Shankarpally, and Ananthagiri hills received significant precipitation, causing local streams and seasonal rivulets to overflow directly into the catchment channels feeding the twin lakes.
