New Delhi: Union Minister of State George Kurian has resigned from the Council of Ministers following the expiration of his Rajya Sabha term. President Droupadi Murmu, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted the resignation with immediate effect under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Kurian’s six-year upper house tenure officially concluded on June 21. He stepped down after the BJP leadership decided against re-nominating him for the Rajya Sabha elections. He held dual roles as the Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.
A veteran leader from Kerala, Kurian was widely recognized as a primary representative of the Christian community within the Union government. He was originally inducted into the cabinet in 2024 as part of the BJP’s regional and community outreach strategy in the southern state.
Alongside Kurian, fellow Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu was also skipped by the BJP for re-nomination in the upper house polls.
