HYDERABAD: The Telugu film industry is in mourning following the demise of veteran actor and film producer Gullepalli Venkata Narayana Rao (G.V. Narayana Rao), who passed away at his residence in Hyderabad at the age of 73 after battling age-related health issues.
A graduate of the Madras Film Institute, Narayana Rao began his acting career under the guidance of legendary director K. Balachander with the 1976 classic Anthuleni Katha. His performance earned him the prestigious Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actor right from his debut. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he appeared in over 100 films, showcasing his versatility across lead roles, character parts, and comic performances. His notable filmography includes critically acclaimed titles such as Oka Oori Katha, Muthyala Pallaki, Manchu Pallaki, Gang Leader, Yamudiki Mogudu, and modern releases like Skylab.
Beyond acting, Narayana Rao also made significant contributions as a film producer under his banner, backing blockbuster hits starring Megastar Chiranjeevi, including Devanthakudu and Yamudiki Mogudu. He shared a long-standing friendship with Superstar Rajinikanth, dating back to their days as batchmates at the Madras Film Institute, and later remade Yamudiki Mogudu in Tamil as Athisaya Piravi starring Rajinikanth. He was also a prominent face on Telugu television, featuring in popular daily serials like Pasupu Kumkuma and Sundarakanda.
Members of the Movie Artists Association (MAA), along with several prominent figures from the Telugu film fraternity, expressed deep grief over his passing and offered their heartfelt condolences to his family, remembering him as a dedicated artist and pioneer of mainstream Telugu cinema
