PATNA: The flood situation across Bihar remains critical, with nearly 48 lakh people affected across 87 blocks in 15 districts following days of heavy rains and major river overflows. According to official updates released by the Disaster Management Department (DMD), low-lying areas in key districts including Patna, Bhagalpur, Vaishali, Saran, Begusarai, Katihar, and Purnea remain inundated under floodwaters.
The worsening conditions stem from continuous localized rainfall paired with heavy precipitation in the upstream catchment areas of Nepal. Major rivers—including the Ganges, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Punpun, and Ghaghra—continue to breach safety thresholds at several monitoring stations. Water levels along the Ganges at Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah, Bhagalpur, and Kahalgaon are currently maintaining flows above the danger mark.
A total of 37 disaster response teams—comprising 27 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units and 10 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams—have been deployed across affected districts for evacuation operations. Over 1,870 local and motorboats are actively operating to transport stranded residents and deliver supplies.
Authorities are running more than 1,220 community kitchens across the state, serving over 59 lakh hot meals to displaced victims. Additionally, 15 dedicated relief camps are housing over 12,000 residents. Over 3.1 lakh polythene shelter sheets, 48,000 dry-ration packets, and 10,800 quintals of animal fodder have been distributed to affected families and livestock owners.
The Bihar Meteorological Service Centre noted that the state has recorded elevated rainfall this month, exceeding normal seasonal averages. While discharge trends at key barrages like Valmikinagar (Gandak) and Birpur (Kosi) have begun to stabilize, the IMD has forecast light-to-moderate showers over the next 48 hours, keeping district administrations on high alert to prevent further breach of embankments.
