Hyderabad: Doctors at Medicover Hospitals, Secunderabad, successfully performed a highly complex kidney transplant on a 49-year-old patient from Sudan, giving him a new lease of life after he was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure of unknown origin, accompanied by severe thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).
The patient was admitted with advanced symptoms of chronic renal failure and was immediately started on maintenance hemodialysis. As part of the transplant evaluation, his son and daughter were assessed as potential kidney donors.
Since the exact cause of the patient’s kidney failure could not be identified, the medical team conducted an extensive evaluation, including advanced genetic testing, to rule out the possibility of recurrence of the disease after transplantation. Both prospective donors also underwent comprehensive medical and immunological assessments.
During the evaluation, the patient’s son was found to have immunological incompatibility due to the presence of anti-HLA antibodies, making him unsuitable as a donor. Following detailed counselling and discussions with the family, the patient’s daughter was selected as the kidney donor.
A multidisciplinary team led by Senior Nephrologists Dr. Prabhu Charan and Dr. Rajeev, Senior Urologist Dr. Raghuveer, and Head of Transplant Anaesthesia Dr. Srinivas successfully performed the kidney transplant after obtaining all necessary medical, legal, and ethical clearances.
The surgery was particularly challenging because of the patient’s abnormal vascular anatomy.
However, the experienced transplant team meticulously managed the complex procedure and completed it successfully. Following the transplant, both the donor and recipient received comprehensive postoperative care under the close supervision of a multidisciplinary team. They recovered remarkably well and were discharged from the hospital within a week.
During one month of follow-up, the patient showed excellent graft function with no signs of infection or organ rejection. He has now regained normal kidney function, is in good health, and has safely returned to his home country, Sudan.
This successful transplant highlights Medicover Hospitals’ expertise in managing highly complex kidney transplant cases through advanced diagnostics, meticulous planning, and coordinated multidisciplinary care.
