Lakhimpur Kheri: At least nine people, all labourers, lost their lives while four others sustained critical injuries after a speeding van collided head-on with a truck in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Monday morning.
The accident took place near Unch village on the Sisaiya-Lakhimpur national highway, police said.
According to sources, the Tata Magic van was carrying more than 12 people, including four women, when it collided with the truck.
Following the mishap, villagers gathered at the scene in large numbers. Receiving information, police officials arrived at the site and initiated rescue operations. Police took custody of the bodies of the deceased and sent them for a post mortem, while the injured were admitted to the Community Health Center, where they are currently undergoing treatment. However, the identities of the deceased have not yet been established.
While no official statement regarding the exact number of casualties and injuries has been issued by the police or the district administration yet, local residents said that nine people have died and several others have been injured.
“The van was enroute to Sisaiya from Lakhimpur when the accident took place between Unchgaon and Bharehta villages. The injured were rushed to the district hospital,” said Shamsher Bahadur Singh, Circle Officer of Dhaurahra.
