Hyderabad: Mild panic gripped authorities at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad after a passenger arriving from Sudan exhibited potential symptoms of the deadly Ebola virus during routine health screenings. The individual was immediately isolated and shifted under tight medical protocols to the state-run Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.
The incident prompted immediate action from the Telangana Health Department, which has put its medical infrastructure and emergency containment wings on high alert.
The passenger, whose identity has been withheld by authorities for privacy reasons, landed in Hyderabad on a flight routing from Sudan. During the mandatory thermal screening at the international arrivals terminal, health officials flagged the passenger for running a high fever, alongside presenting with severe muscle pain and fatigue—symptoms that align with standard health screening protocols for hemorrhagic fevers.
Given the passenger’s travel history from a region closely monitored for viral outbreaks, airport health authorities immediately triggered an emergency isolation protocol. A specialized, bio-secure ambulance was deployed to transport the patient directly to Gandhi Hospital, the designated nodal center for handling international infectious disease threats in the state.
Upon arrival at Gandhi Hospital, the patient was admitted to a specially equipped, high-security isolation ward. A dedicated team of doctors, nursing staff, and sanitization workers wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been assigned to handle the case.
Hospital authorities have confirmed that the patient’s vital signs are currently stable, and symptomatic treatment has commenced. “We have taken all necessary precautionary measures. There is absolutely no need for the public to panic,” a senior medical official at Gandhi Hospital stated. “Blood and fluid samples have been collected under strict biosafety guidelines. We are dispatching them immediately to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for comprehensive testing. We expect the definitive results within the next 24 to 48 hours.”
As a standard preventive measure, the Health Department has initiated a preliminary contact-tracing exercise. Authorities are compiling a list of co-passengers who sat in the immediate rows around the individual during the flight, as well as the airline crew and airport staff who interacted with the passenger at the terminal.
While health officials emphasize that this is currently a precautionary response to a suspected case and not a confirmed diagnosis, surveillance at all entry points into the city has been significantly tightened to ensure public safety.
