Tripura sanctions Rs 57 cr for Sepahijala Zoo modernisation

Agartala, Jan 17: The Tripura government has undertaken a plan to bring modern amenities and facilities in the state’s lone sanctuary – Sepahijala to ensure better wildlife care and attract tourists.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma announced that the state has secured over Rs 57 crore for the modernisation and comprehensive development of the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary in Sepahijala district.
Debbarma visited the zoo, prompted by complaints from foreign tourists about plastic waste and unhygienic conditions in the sanctuary premises. He personally inspected the area after learning about scattered plastic garbage affecting cleanliness and the overall visitor experience in parts of the sanctuary.
Debbarma addressed the complaints from foreign tourists, emphasising that necessary steps are being taken to collect and safely dispose of plastic waste, while also highlighting the importance of responsible visitor behaviour.
He assured that the administration and zoo authorities are continuously working to maintain a clean, plastic-free environment for the convenience of tourists. Also mentioned the existence of an approved development plan from the Central Zoo Authority and the utilisation of funds received under the Ministry of DoNER to upgrade the zoo to international standards, including the exploration of introducing new species from outside.
