PM Modi Issues Three-Point Appeal for Economic Self-Reliance

NEW DELHI: In the backdrop of India recording a strong 7.8% GDP growth rate in the first quarter of FY 2026–27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, terming the performance a “herculean feat” achieved despite global uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, and rising oil prices.

Linking the economic momentum directly to the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), PM Modi extended three specific appeals to the public regarding their personal spending choices to keep capital circulating within the domestic economy.

First, he urged citizens to avoid unnecessary foreign holidays and instead prioritize domestic travel to boost local tourism, hospitality, and regional businesses.

Second, he renewed his call to refrain from hosting expensive destination weddings abroad, urging families to adopt a “Wed in India” mindset so event expenditures directly benefit domestic artisans, venues, and service providers.

Third, the Prime Minister asked households to avoid unnecessary physical gold purchases—which strain national import balances—and to strongly embrace Swadeshi (locally made) goods over foreign imports to empower Indian manufacturing and secure long-term economic growth.
