New Delhi: In a major political development aimed at reshaping the electoral landscape of Andhra Pradesh, the Indian National Congress (INC) leadership has finalized the nomination of Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President YS Sharmila for an upcoming Rajya Sabha seat.
The decision, which comes after high-level deliberations by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in New Delhi, is being viewed as a reward for her spirited campaign in the state and a calculated strategic move to anchor her permanently in mainstream national politics.
By elevating Sharmila to the Upper House of Parliament, the Congress central leadership aims to achieve two primary objectives: providing her with a powerful national platform to counter rival regional parties and ensuring her sustained presence in Delhi to coordinate southern political strategies.
According to party insiders, Sharmila’s nomination will be adjusted through a vacant seat from one of the Congress-ruled states, such as Karnataka or Telangana, where the party possesses the requisite legislative numbers to guarantee a smooth victory.
Ever since she merged her YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) into the Congress and took the reins of the party’s Andhra Pradesh unit, Sharmila has been aggressively working to revive the Congress footprint in the state, directly challenging the ruling dispensation and her brother, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
“Sharmila ji has shown immense grit and determination on the ground. Giving her a Rajya Sabha seat is an acknowledgment of her leadership,” a senior All India Congress Committee (AICC) leader stated. “Her voice in Parliament will act as a major boost for the cadre in Andhra Pradesh, where the Congress is on a steady path of revival.”
Political analysts note that a parliamentary seat will grant Sharmila official stature to raise state-centric issues—such as the Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh, the completion of the Polavaram project, and the Vizag Steel Plant privatization dispute—directly on the floor of the House. This is expected to legitimize the Congress as a formidable alternative in the state’s highly polarized political ecosystem.
The news of her impending nomination has triggered widespread celebrations among Congress workers across Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana. Senior APCC leaders welcomed the high command’s decision, stating that a seat in the Rajya Sabha would give her the administrative leverage and security required to travel extensively across the districts without being bogged down by local electoral vulnerabilities.
With the formal announcement and filing of nomination papers expected in the coming days, Sharmila’s entry into the Rajya Sabha is set to mark a turning point in her political career, transitioning her from a regional campaigner into a key national legislator for the Congress party.
