Hyderabad, Jan 12 (UNI): The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Sunday successfully flight-tested the Third Generation Fire-and-Forget Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) with top-attack capability against a moving target at KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra.
The indigenously developed MPATGM is equipped with advanced technologies, including an Imaging Infrared (IIR) homing seeker, all-electric control actuation system, fire control system, tandem warhead, propulsion system and a high-performance sighting system. These systems have been developed by various DRDO laboratories such as Defence Research & Development Laboratory (Hyderabad), Research Centre Imarat (Hyderabad), Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (Chandigarh), High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (Pune) and Instruments Research & Development Establishment (Dehradun), a defence release said here.
The Thermal Target System used during the trial was developed by Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, to simulate a tank target. The IIR seeker enables day and night combat capability, while the tandem warhead is designed to defeat modern main battle tanks.
The missile can be launched from a tripod or a military vehicle-mounted launcher.
Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) are the Development-cum-Production Partners for the weapon system.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the industry partners and all stakeholders involved, describing the successful test as a significant step towards achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence technologies.
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, stated that the successful engagement of the moving target paves the way for the missile system’s induction into the Indian Army.
