Govt Doctor Suspended After Fracturing Child’s Plastered Leg Over Unpaid Rs. 25,000 Bribe

Lucknow: In a highly disturbing incident highlighting institutional corruption and medical apathy, a senior orthopedic surgeon at a government district hospital in Uttar Pradesh was suspended today, Thursday, June 4, 2026, after he allegedly deliberately fractured a child’s partially healed bone because the parents failed to pay a bribe of Rs. 25,000.

The state Health Department took immediate action following massive public outrage, an initial departmental inquiry, and a police complaint filed by the victim’s family.

According to local police reports, seven-year-old Rohit was brought to the district hospital two weeks ago by his father, Ramesh Kumar, a daily wage laborer, following a bicycle accident that resulted in a fracture in his left leg. The child was treated, and a temporary plaster cast was put in place.

During a follow-up appointment on Tuesday to replace it with a permanent cast, the attending orthopedic specialist, Dr. RK Mishra, allegedly demanded an under-the-table payment of Rs. 25,000 to proceed with the procedure and ensure smooth post-operative care.

Ramesh Kumar reportedly pleaded with the doctor, explaining his financial inability to pay such a high amount, offering only Rs. 2,000 instead. Infuriated by the refusal, Dr. Mishra allegedly began handling the young boy violently during the examination. Witnesses and the family claimed that the doctor intentionally applied extreme, twisting pressure to the boy’s injured leg, snapping the bone further and causing the child to scream in agonizing pain before ordering the family out of the ward.

The child’s condition deteriorated rapidly due to severe internal trauma, forcing the family to rush him to a nearby private charitable facility, where X-rays confirmed a fresh, displaced fracture right next to the original injury site.

As the family staged a protest outside the Chief Medical Officer’s (CMO) office, the incident caught the attention of Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak. Taking stern note of the matter, Pathak ordered the immediate suspension of Dr. Mishra and initiated a high-level inquiry panel.

“This is a heinous violation of medical ethics and humanity. Corruption inside government healthcare institutions will be met with absolute zero tolerance. A government doctor’s job is to heal, not to intentionally harm an innocent citizen,” the Deputy CM stated in a public warning.

A local police unit has registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) and provisions under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Police officials confirmed that teams have been dispatched to arrest the doctor, who has gone missing since the suspension order was handed down.

Meanwhile, the Health Department has directed the district hospital administration to ensure the child receives comprehensive corrective surgery and orthopedic rehabilitation entirely free of charge.
