New Delhi, Feb 23: In a major diplomatic move reflecting the “deteriorating security conditions” in the Middle East, the Government of India has issued a fresh advisory on Monday, February 23, urging all Indian citizens currently in Iran to leave the country “by all available means.”
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Tehran released the urgent notice citing the rapidly evolving geopolitical situation. While mediated talks had previously offered a glimpse of stability, a massive increase in regional military presence and persistent civil unrest have prompted New Delhi to reiterate and strengthen its evacuation guidance.
The advisory applies to all approximately 10,000 Indian nationals residing in the Islamic Republic, including students, pilgrims, business travelers, and tourists. They have been strongly advised to secure passage out of the country via commercial flights or other available transit routes before further disruptions to international travel occur.
“In view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals are advised to leave the country by available means of transport… all Indian citizens and PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests, and stay in constant contact with the Embassy,” the official notice stated.
To facilitate the departure process, the Indian Embassy has activated four emergency 24/7 hotlines and requested all residents who have not yet registered on the MEA’s global portal to do so immediately. Consular officials are reportedly working with local authorities and airlines to maintain commercial capacity, though major carriers like IndiGo have already begun suspending certain routes through Iranian airspace.
For those unable to leave immediately, the government has advised staying indoors, keeping travel documents and identification readily accessible, and following local media updates closely. Families in India have also been urged to register their relatives’ details if internet disruptions in Iran prevent them from doing so themselves.
