Dr. A. Venugopal, Senior Consultant Medical Oncologist & Hemato-Oncologist, Medicover Cancer Institute, said that patients diagnosed with advanced-stage liver cancer previously had very limited treatment options.
However, the advent of modern immunotherapy and targeted therapy has significantly improved outcomes and offered renewed hope to many patients.
A 56-year-old woman, Mrs. Jayalakshmi, from Mustabad in Rajanna Sircilla district, presented to Medicover Cancer Institute with severe swelling and pain on the right side of her chest.
Comprehensive investigations, including MRI, FNAC, and PET-CT scans, revealed Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), the most common form of liver cancer, with metastasis to the right seventh rib and the D10 vertebra.
Following a thorough multidisciplinary evaluation, the oncology team initiated treatment with Atezolizumab-based immunotherapy combined with Bevacizumab targeted therapy, one of the internationally accepted first-line treatment approaches for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.
After completing six cycles of treatment, a follow-up PET-CT scan demonstrated remarkable clinical improvement. The scan showed no evidence of metabolically active cancer in the liver, while the metastatic lesions in the rib and spine had regressed significantly.
Encouraged by this excellent response, the patient successfully received her seventh cycle of treatment. She tolerated the therapy well without any major adverse effects and is currently in good health.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A. Venugopal said, “Many people believe that advanced-stage liver cancer leaves little hope for recovery. However, recent advances in immunotherapy and targeted therapy have transformed the treatment landscape, enabling us to achieve meaningful disease control and improved quality of life, even in patients with metastatic disease. Every cancer patient requires an individualized treatment approach based on the type, stage, and overall health condition.
Early diagnosis, timely consultation with specialists, and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference in patient outcomes.”
Medicover Cancer Institute continues to offer comprehensive, evidence-based cancer care through advanced diagnostics, multidisciplinary expertise, and cutting-edge treatment modalities, providing patients with access to world-class oncology services.
