Madanapalle, March 1: A massive forest fire has broken out in the Horsley Hills range of Annamayya district, sending plumes of smoke across the popular hill station and threatening its delicate ecosystem. Fed by rising temperatures and dry deciduous vegetation, the blaze has already consumed several hectares of forest land in the Madanapalle and Palamaner ranges.
The fire, which reportedly started in the lower reaches of the hills, quickly ascended toward the precipitous Galibanda point. Forest officials noted that the abundance of dry shrubs and wild grass, typical for early March, acted as fuel. A local forest ranger stated that the lack of significant winter rains has left the hills exceptionally dry, making the deployment of rapid response teams difficult due to the steep terrain and heavy early-morning fog.
Horsley Hills, situated at an elevation of 1,265 meters, is a biodiversity hotspot home to over 113 species of birds and rare flora. Local environmentalists are concerned that the fire could lead to the destruction of nesting grounds for migratory birds, increased soil erosion, and the displacement of wildlife into nearby agricultural patches.
In response, the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department has issued a high alert for the Chittoor and Annamayya districts. Authorities have temporarily restricted tourist access to certain trekking trails and viewpoints to ensure public safety. Firefighters are currently using fire blowers and creating fire lines to prevent the blaze from reaching the main resort areas and residential colonies atop the hills.
