Adilabad, Jan 19: The Nagoba Jatara of Keslapur in Inderavelly mandal, Adilabad district, commenced on a grand note with a “Maha Puja” (great prayer) at midnight on Sunday. Amidst the sounds of traditional tribal instruments like the Sannayi and Dolu, and the glow of traditional torches, members of the Mesram clan performed special rituals, including the sacred bath (Abhishekam) of Nagoba with holy water from the Ganges. High-ranking officials and public representatives participated in large numbers, while devotees are flocking to the temple for a glimpse of the deity.
The Second Largest Tribal Fair in Asia
The Nagoba Jatara is renowned as the second largest tribal fair in Asia. Every year, the Mesram clan initiates the festivities following the sighting of the moon in the month of Pushya.
On December 30, clan members embarked on a foot pilgrimage from Keslapur to Hastinamadugu to collect sacred water. After returning to Keslapur, they officially inaugurated the fair by performing the midnight Abhishekam and Maha Puja to the serpent god, Adisheshu, on Sunday.
Schedule of Events (Until Jan 23)
The festivities, which began Sunday, will continue until January 23. Key events include:
- January 20: Persapen and Banpen Pujas.
- January 22: The traditional Nagoba Durbar (a grievance redressal assembly).
- January 23: Conclusion of the fair with Betal Puja and Mandagajaling Puja.
Devotees from the Telugu states as well as neighboring border states are expected to attend in massive numbers. In light of the crowds, district officials have taken special measures to ensure the safety and convenience of all pilgrims.
