SRWHQO Organised a tree plantation drive under the aegis of Sonia Singh

Chennai: The Southern Railway Women’s Headquarters Organisation (SRWHQO) organised a tree plantation drive on 24th June 2026, under the aegis of Smt. Sonia Singh, President, SRWHQO. The event was held at the Ashraya School for Special Children, run by SRWHQO at Perambur.

Sonia Singh, President, SRWHQO, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Smt. Charu Gupta, Vice-President, Smt. Tina Rajpal, Secretary, Smt Hasana Meena, Treasurer and other members of SRWHQO actively participated in the event. Various fruit plants like Guava, Chickoo, sweet lime, and pomegranate were planted.  Over 200 saplings of flowers like jasmine, coral jasmine and Hibiscus were distributed to the students and staff of Ashraya, with the aim of encouraging tree planting, raising environmental awareness, and promoting community participation in protecting nature.

Smt. Sonia Singh, President, SRWHQO encouraged the children to plant more trees and also nourish the plants given to them.

The students of Ashraya School took part in the initiative with great enthusiasm, contributing actively to the spirit of environmental awareness and green action.  A similar tree plantation programme was also conducted at the Blossom Creche & Day Care Centre, run by SRWHQO.  Snacks were distributed to all the children, teachers and staff.

Ashraya, a school-cum-vocational training centre exclusively for special children, was established on 8th February 1993. The institution offers an individualised educational programme for children from the age of six, with the primary objective of making them independent and self-reliant through a focus on self-help skills, academics, pre-vocational skills, and vocational training.

The educational framework for these children is based on the Individualised Educational Programme (IEP). Extra-curricular activities include yoga, play therapy, arts and crafts, and vocational training, delivered by specially qualified staff. Ashraya provides vocational training to students aged 16 and above in making envelopes, paper bags, phenyl, diyas and candles. With the right environment and training, the students of Ashraya have shown that they can not only become self-sufficient but also excel in computer education, sports, and arts and crafts.
