Islamabad High Court Bars Solitary Confinement for Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: In a significant legal relief for jailed former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday directed Adiala Jail authorities to immediately end their solitary confinement and restore basic prisoner rights as mandated under jail regulations.

Delivering the order on a batch of petitions challenging harsh prison conditions, Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro ruled that the claims of solitary confinement were maintainable and ordered the jail administration to allow regular, scheduled family visits, facilitate telephone calls between Khan and his sons, and provide daily access to books and newspapers.

The court further instructed the superintendent of Adiala Jail to ensure proper medical care for the 73-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and submit a detailed compliance report within 15 days. The ruling brings major relief to Khan’s family and legal team, who have spent weeks voicing deep concerns over his deteriorating health—including severe vision impairment—and follows an ongoing legal tussle over an earlier apex court direction regarding his medical evaluation and hospital care.
