Mobile Battery Explosion at Hyderabad Airport Triggers Brief Panic During Security Check

Hyderabad: A minor explosion involving a mobile phone battery caused a momentary scare at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The incident occurred during a routine security screening, leading to a brief disruption at the terminal.

According to airport security officials, the incident took place in the afternoon while Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were inspecting the hand luggage of a passenger. The passenger was reportedly scheduled to board a flight to Raipur. As the bag passed through the scanner or was being manually checked, the lithium-ion battery of a mobile phone inside the luggage suddenly overheated and exploded with a minor blast, followed by thick smoke.

The sudden noise and smoke triggered panic among nearby travelers, many of whom were seen moving away from the security counters in haste. However, the alert CISF personnel immediately secured the area and neutralized the device. No injuries were reported to the passenger, the security staff, or any bystanders.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a short circuit or a technical malfunction within the battery. Following the incident, security officials conducted a thorough inspection of the passenger’s remaining belongings to ensure no other hazardous materials were present. After a brief delay and verification process, the situation was brought under control, and airport operations returned to normalcy.

Airport authorities have once again urged passengers to ensure that their electronic devices are in good working condition and to follow all safety guidelines regarding the transport of lithium batteries in carry-on luggage.
